History

1. Cross Contamination of Cell Cultures ASCB

2. Eradication of Cross-Contaminated Cell Lines: A Call for Action. by Roland M. Nardone.

This paper originated as a white paper and was widely disseminated to the Boards of several professional societies, major cell repositories, laboratory and institute directors, and other scientists. It traces the history of misidentification and cross-contamination, documents key events, and proposes a solution to the problem. It has served since 2005, as the core paper for the current initiative for correction. It was subsequently published in the peer review journal, Cell Biology and Toxicology, 23: 367-372 (2007).

3. Cases of Mistaken Identity by Rhittu Chatterjee.

This paper was published in Science 315: 929-931. 2007. Science magazine decided to investigate the cross-contamination issue soon after it recieved a copy of an email widely distributed by the Office of Research Integrity. Devoid of overt endorsement, the email called the attention of scientists to the white paper, Eradication of Cross-Contaminated Cell Lines: A Call for Action (Cell Biol. and Toxicol. 23:367-372. 2007). The interviews reveal a broad range of responses to the crisis, the absence of leadership, denial, and a lack of awareness. It has numerous lessons worth remembering.

4. Cross-Contamination of Cells in Culture

5. Enzyme Polymorphisms as Genetic Signatures in Human Cell Cultures

6. Short Tandem Repeat Profiling Provides an International Reference for Human Cell Lines
